The Firearms Forum is on online community for all gun enthusiasts. Also I checked all post 1880 Francotte patents (even the rifle patents) but could find none that corresponded to Brevette 316. The other poincon 'JLF' is most likely the touchmark of the barrel knitter.my guess is Jean Falla.post the photos and I'll see what I can decypher.Belgian SxS's are one of my specialties.
FRANCOTTE SHOTGUN SERIAL NUMBERS CODE
All post 1922 (omega poincon) will also have a DATE CODE poincon.if you can post a photo of barrel flats and action flats, I will tell you exactly what year your gun went through the proof house and most likely the name of the government official who personally proofed your gun.again this goes for ALL post 1922 Belgian double shotguns with the omega guage designation, not just Francotte. Francotte or any other Belgian double made after 1922 will have the guage designation in a horseshoe or omega shaped symbol (stamp) called a poincon.this is NOT a proof mark or a touchmark.most Belgian doubles made before 1921 will have the guage designation in a diamond shaped poincon. If you have any additional information now I'd like to hear from you. I'm curious as to how much this piece may be worth.
FRANCOTTE SHOTGUN SERIAL NUMBERS PROFESSIONAL
I have never talked to a firearms professional about it but I am planning on doing that in the near future. The right lock is engraved with 'Paris France' and the left with 'A. The bottom left barrel has '25' and the right bottom barrel has '42' marked on them. The bottom rib is marked with '6315', the S/N, and '7813 10'. The number 559 is stamped beneath the crown. Like your gun, mine is marked on the top of the barrel release tang with 'Francotte Brevette' stamped on the sides of a crown. The S/N is stamped on the bottom rib under the forearm and on the trigger guard tang. It is in good condition but since it is Damascus and used black powder shot shells it has some barrel pitting. When my dad died in 1981 I became the owner. When he died in the 1960's my dad inherited the shotgun. My great uncle used it to hunt ducks and geese. It is my understanding that Francotte made these for Abercrombie and Fitch exclusively. My dad's uncle (my great uncle I guess) bought this shotgun from Abercrombie & Fitch in the 1930's. I haven't had any luck finding information about this type of firearm. It is an external hammer Damascus barrel shotgun. Can anyone tell me when this gun may have been made or imported to the US, or any other data about this gun? I found your post when I was searching the web for information about a Francotte 10Ga. Between the barrels on the lower rib is the serial number (6198) and the number 7522 GB 10. The right barrel has just one 25, the letters JLF close together like initials, the number 19.4 (or 194 not clear), and another AF Crown symbol. The right barrel is hand stamped with 2525, the E over LG, and a different AF crown symbol. The gun is marked with the E over LG so I know it was made in Belgium. I assume that the AF crown symbol is the Auguste Francotte signature mark. Ther is a mark above the beavertail that is the AF crown symbol and the number 316 surrounded on the sides by the words FRANCOTTE and BREVETE. There are also some manufacturer marks with AF and a crown in several places. It is marked on top on the rib with the following: 8420 A.įrancotte Paris France B. The style appears to be from some time between 1940-1950 but I am just guessing.
